We are trying to live these hectic days of Christmas time with a sense of expectation, preparation, and serenity. We can easily get caught up with the purely material aspects of life thinking that all of these preparations will make us and our families and friends happier. Deep down we do realize that this is not so and that real happiness can only come from spiritual things. We can name just a few of the more important ones: love, real friendship, forgiveness, and prayer.
I am sure you are realizing because of the present economic and social problems, that you are slowly changing your lives and your values to higher levels. You are concentrating more on actions that “touch” a person deep down. This of course does not need money or wealth to put into practice.
We often speak about our time, talent and treasure as blessings that we have received. At this time of the year, try to see how you are honoring these gifts by sharing them with others, especially the needy in all their aspects and with all whom you meet. It will help you to make this Christmas time much more joyful for you and for others.
Next week, you will be receiving my annual Christmas letter. I hope you read it carefully, especially about the Mass schedule for Christmas and New Year’s. Share this letter with your family and others. I also take this opportunity to remind you that we are part of the Diocesan and parish campaign “Alive in Christ.” You will be asked in January to make a pledge for five years in order to accomplish the goals given by the Diocesan Synod of two years ago, and this will be of great benefit for the Diocesan needs with 35% and the parish with 65% of the total pledged. Our goal is $1,000,000. Your generosity can only be rewarded by God who is never outdone in giving us his blessings.
May Jesus Christ, whose birthday we will soon celebrate, grant you many blessings, especially Peace, Joy, and Love. May you share these blessings and affection with your loved ones, especially the little children, teenagers, elderly, and the poor.
My Christmas blessings and prayers also be with you and your family, my good people of God!
